Easy Budget Turkey Chili

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

If you came here for the most accurate turkey chili recipe, this is not the place for you, this is an easy just wing it type of shebang on a budget.

This is one of the easiest recipes for chili I have ever made. Not only is it simple and fast, but it’s delicious and gets many a compliment. I like using turkey for my chili because it is slightly less heavy than beef, and *technically* a healthier option.

Easy budget turkey chili

Now, there are many ways to alter this recipe in order to make it a bit fancier but this is the bare bones for an easy delicious, turkey chili especially on a budget. I’ll mention the alterations you can add, just taste and experiment yourself!
Last note: spices are a very touchy thing. I usually pour them on until the meat turns a reddish-brown color and tastes good. It averages the measurements I put down in the ingredients, but feel free to use more, or a little less. Everyone has their own opinion on how much spice they tolerate and enjoy.

Cook Time 25 minutes minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 can Rotel Original Diced Tomatoes & Green Chilies
  • 4 tbsp chili powder (to taste)
  • 2 tbsp paprika (to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp red cayenne pepper (to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 cups tomato sauce (I used Private Selection Napoletana Roasted Garlic Sauce)
  • 1 can Dark Red Kidney Beans

Optional

  • 4 cloves garlic minced/crushed
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 1 can corn

Garnishes

  • Sour Cream
  • Chives/Green Onion
  • Parsley
  • Shreded Cheese (I like Mexican Blend Mix)

Instructions

  • Place turkey in a frying pan on high heat. Oil is not necessary, because the turkey will give off fluid.
  • Use a spatula to break the turkey into small pieces. If onion and garlic is decided to be added, do so after the turkey is properly broken up.
  • After the turkey is evenly browned, add a can of rotel diced tomatoes with the juice.
  • Add 2 tbsps of chili powder, 2 tbsp of paprika, the cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper and garlic powder. Taste it, and add the rest of the chili powder and any more spice that you might want to add.
  • Add the 2 cups of tomato sauce, mix, and let it simmer on low heat for a few minutes. If it starts spitting and is too thick, add half a cup of water to the tomato sauce can, swirl around and add that to the chili.
  • Finally, wash and strain the dark red kidney beans and add them to the chili. If you are adding corn, add corn!
  • Turn off heat and you are done! Add garnishes! Eat it in a taco, eat it on rice. Ya know, just wing it!
