The apple butter sausage pizza is a sweet and spicy delicious non-traditional pizza. One of my favorite pizza places (not in NYC), is in Floyd Virginia where they make this amazing Appalachian pizza. I drive there just to eat it! Since the stay-at-home order, I have been craving it and decided to recreate it. This is a guesstimate recipe but it is definitely close. I was also way too lazy to make pizza dough, so I got a store-bought variety. The toppings speak for themselves and the dough was the least of my worries. Super easy and doesn’t use too many ingredients. Since all the ingredients in the apple butter sausage pizza are so flavorful, you don’t even need to worry about seasoning!

Apple Butter Sausage Pizza
The sweet apple butter and savory sausage are perfectly balanced with goat cheese and caramelized onions. It is worth a try!
Servings 8 slices
Ingredients
- pre-made pizza dough
- 3-4 tbsp apple butter
- 1/3 lb hot Italian sausage
- 1/2 medium onion (or one small onion)
- 1-2 tbsp butter
- 2-4 oz goat cheese or crumbled goat cheese
Instructions
Pizza crust
- Follow the directions for the pizza dough you bought. Mine said to take it out of the fridge for 20 minutes before rolling it out. It also said to bake for 5-7 minutes in the oven before putting toppings.

Prep toppings (while the dough is resting/in the oven)
- Thinly slice onions and add them to a small heated pan with butter to caramelize. Stir them every so often and slowly cook them for 20-30 minutes.
- Add the Italian sausage to a large hot pan and break up the chances into small pieces. Take off heat once fully cooked through.
Pizza assembly
- Add 3-4 tbsp of apple butter and spread around in a thin layer.

- Distribute the hot sausage on to the apple butter, add the caramelized onions, and sprinkle on the goat cheese.

- Put in the oven for 18-22 minutes. Half way through, turn the pizza so it evenly browns.
